Henry is out of surgery and doing very well!

So first things first, Henry made it out of surgery and everything went very well according to his surgeon. They were able to make the artery switch between the pulmanary and aorta. Also they relocated the coronary arteries to match. The heart is in good condition and profusing as it should now. They repaired the hole that was left from having to enlarge a naturally occurring connection between the right and left upper chambers (the atria). Also the drug PGE, that was used to keep the ductis open to allow the passive transfer of oxygen from one side of the heart to the other, has been stopped and the ductis was surgically repaired. PGE1 is no longer being used for Henry. The third thing that was going to happen at surgery but was not needed was a repair to his aorta for a condition called coarctation or narrowing of the aorta. Coarctation commonly occurs in Transpositions (also known as blue baby syndome) but in Henry's case was found unnessary. One complication that the surgeon did have was a small heart rythem change to super ventriular tachycardia. This is a rapid rythem of the heart. It is something that Henry went into the surgery with and they had to put ice cold water on his heart several times during surgery to snap it back into a regular rythem. We have found out that this is not a rare occurace and has to be watched. They said now that he is out of surgery with his chest closed that they would correct it using small defribulations from leads they temporarily left implanted near his heart. These can be removed non surgically as with all of the other tubes. All and all everything went better than we could have wished for.
We are told now it's a waiting game with a lot of baby steps. Every hour he gets better they can reduce the need for tubes and meds. They also said every removal of a tube is like a celebration.

We are not sure of the time frame for recovery but we do know it will be several weeks at a minimum.

Going from waiting for the helicopter in Ronan to the jet in Missoula to sitting in NICU this has been the slowest and fastest 10 days for Debbie and I. It is such a surreal feeling to be finally on the other side of this surgery. We are so happy (SO HAPPY) all we can do is sit, stare, and grin! We have had the very best of scenerios when dealing with something like this and it started with our doctor and nurses in Ronan. Please celebrate tonight in whatever way you wish and know that we are in a great place. Feels like delivery times 10.

Anyways we are certainly not out of the woods by any stretch; however, Henry is doing great (all things considered) Thank you to all for prayers, notes, well wishes, and thoughts. I can not tell you how humbling it feels to know how much people care. We will update in the morning. The pictures below were taken about an hour after Henry's heart surgery.

Thank you,
From all of the Hanson's (including Henry)

P.S. In looking at many of the abbreviated explanations of what Henry has been dealing with the following link explains it in terms I can understand.

It's so good to hear that Henry is doing well. We know exactly what you are going through. I know it is a little frightening seeing them after surgery, but it gets better each day. It sounds like he's a fixed man and it is all down hill from here. He sure looks well filled out and healthy. Jonathan was very thin. Jonathan had pace making wires too. They came out when they felt it was safe. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. I even had a dream about your baby before surgery. Stay strong. Joyce and Doug

Dear Debbie, I am very happy to read that the surgery went well. (I didn't know you were writing on the blog other than FB, so I read everything today) I wish I could be there to give you a big hug. I hope to be able to come soon and do it in person. I would really love for my son to get to know George, Henry and Emily! (So I'll start his english lesson soon!)Please keep in mind that in case you need anything from this side of the earth, I'd be happy to help.
Love,

Martina

Debbie & Andy,
Staunton and I are very happy to hear Henry's surgery went well. We had been checking all day; keeping Henry in our hearts and on our minds. We celebrated when we read both your posts last night (our time zone is 2 hours earlier).
Thank you for the blogging - you must have been exhausted! What great character you have shown all of us throughout Henry's ordeal. To mention a few examples. . . You have been positive in accepting adverse circumstances and moving ahead toward the best outcome for your baby. You are continually in touch with your family and friends. You have generously thanked and recognized those who have been directly involved in Henry's and your family's care. You have schooled yourselves in the technical details of Henry's condition and then explained them in ways we can understand. The list goes on . . . Staunt and I can't say enough about how impressed we are by you two! You might think it is what any parent would do but you have done it with extraordinary grace.
Please pass on a hug to Mickey & Jon. Be well and get some rest!
Love
Annie & Staunton
